Thailand plans to cut down rice production during off-season by 600,000 tons and boost bean family crops in order to enrich the soil and to aid flood prevention measures.

Thailand total rice production is estimated to be around 30-35 million tons. Out of this , 20-25 million tons is produced during the May-November period, while in the second and third crop season , the country produces around 7-8 million tons and 2-4 million tons respectively.

According to officials from the Agriculture Department, growing beans during the off season will enhance the soil quality.

Meanwhile, Thailand rice exports has fallen due to recent Minimum Export Price (MEP) hike, which made it costly for the global buyers.

The rise in MEP was to ensure profit for the farmers in the country. Thailand is the biggest exporter of rice.
