Rice production in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil’s southernmost state, would be between 7.6 million and 7.8 million tons in this season, according to Rio Grande Institute of Rice (Irga).

The Irga estimate is higher than an earlier one by the National Supply Company (Conab), which had concluded from polls that the rice output would decrease 17.2% from last harvest to 7.371 million tons of paddy this season.

The difference seems to be from the yield figures as both estimates have the acreage at 1.05 million hectares. While the Irga expects the rice yield to be between 7,300 pounds to 7,500 pounds per acre (around 9.2 tons per hectare), Conab’s estimates it to be around 7,000 pounds per acre (around 8.75 tons per hectare).

Paraguay exported a record 237,525 tons of rice last year.

The country’s exports between January and December 2011 comprised of white rice (109,652 tons at an average price of $453 per ton), brown rice (61,214 tons at an average price of $330 per ton), paddy rice (57,067 tons at an average price of $265 per ton) and broken rice (9,592 tons at an average price of $352 per ton).

Harvest is underway and this year, Paraguay’s rice acreage increased 35% from previous crop to 81,000 hectares, and the yield is estimated around 5 tons per hectare, with some parts registering around 8 tons per hectare yield.
